The Windsor-Essex Caduceus Group

When health care professionals (HCPs) suffering from substance use disorder or mental disease, after being "taken off the job" by their employer, are eventually compelled by their college to undertake a process of rehabilitation. This will invariably include the requirement that they become members of a caduceus group and when they do this, they will meet a group of other very supportive co-workers who are an invaluable source of support and advice.

The caduceus group, with the assistance of its members will be able to initiate the rehabilitation process and start the journey towards recovery. We have been providing the medical, counselling and management resources needed fulfill this role and have been recognised by the colleges as a suitable organisation do so.

Contact the Windsor-Essex Caduceus Group:
Dr. Tony Hammer or Michele Kelly at 519-257-0981

Below is a summary of the advice the Caduceus Group will be offering:

  • Do not voluntarily resign your position or surrender your license to practice.
  • Find out whether your employer has yet reported or plan to report your position to your college (they are obliged to do so).
  • If a member of a union, consult your representative about the benefits and representation you are entitled to.
  • See your family physician and request medical leave of absence note for your employer.
  • Enter a treatment programme, preferably one that is residential. We recommend The House of Sophrosyne and Westover-Treatment-Centre.
  • Start attending a counselling group such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

All participants are health care workers at various stages on the road to recovery from addiction. We meet on a regular basis to provide mutual support for ourselves and guidance navigating the regulatory system.
